Founded in January 2014, the Women’s Studies Collective (WSC) is an interdisciplinary student organization invested in the vitality of Women’s Studies at The University of West Florida. Our group meets monthly to discuss feminist-minded publications and the implications of these texts. Through these gatherings, we establish personal and professional networks that not only better us as individuals and students but also as invested members of the academic and local community. The WSC continues to facilitate a more pronounced public impact through several collaborative projects with other university-recognized organizations and local nonprofits. In November of 2014, for example, the WSC hosted its first art exhibition, Feminist Iconography, at The Art Gallery (TAG) here at UWF. This show drew in over 250 attendees, who enjoyed local and regional works by over 15 different artists and poets. The WSC also hosted its first-ever open mic night in June of 2014, which packed the house at End of the Line Cafe in downtown Pensacola, and afforded over 15 poets and poetry lovers to read some of their favorite works by their most beloved female poets or works that concern themselves with women’s issues and experiences. Ultimately we hope to not only sustain the presence of Women’s Studies here at UWF, but more broadly to organize a coalition of students and faculty members who are invested in the issues surrounding Women’s Studies, and willing to put forth the time and effort to heighten the community’s critical awareness of these issues.
